Radiation – Don’t you think it is time to stop hitting the snooze button?

 I really don’t understand why we continue dealing with nuclear components, both for energy and as weapons.  It’s very existence is a preamble to our extinction.  You would think that we have seen enough regarding the impact of radiation.  They argue, there are safety standards, safety regulations and safety alerting systems.  Safety for what.  Once it is loose there is no containing it.  Don’t we remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki?  Critiques say that you can not compare nuclear bomb to nuclear power plants.  What about 3 Mile Island, or Chernobyl, and now Japan?  Plus do you really think our governments are disclosing the truth.  I don’t know how accurate this article is, but if you 25% is accurate, then it is 25% too much.  Check out:  Calendar of Nuclear Accidents and Events.  Our interactions with radioactive materials do not make logical sense, such as:

• Underground test explosions. What happens to that are afterward?  Concreting the area is the solution they use, but the life span of concrete is shorter than the life span of radioactive material.
• Radioactive materials stores in deep mines or caverns.  Stored in containers that won’t outlast the radioactive materials they contain.  Are we just creating another massive disaster for a time in the future?  What if there is an earthquake?
• Underwater test explosions.  What happens to the water afterward?  Where does the contaminated water go?  If we knew how to decontaminate, why wouldn’t we use that technology to decontaminate all of the stored radioactive materials.
• Controled containment venting?  What happens to the air, and where does that air travel?  The vented air is filtered to reduce the amount of radiation.  What does reduce mean?  Is any amount okay.  Why do they put a lead protection pad over you when you get x-rays at the dentist?  Plus, if we knew how to decontaminate it, why wouldn’t we use that technology to decontaminate all of the stored radioactive materials.

Please take a look at the pictures below.  Haven’t we learned our lesson?  How many people have to suffer and die?  How many contaminated areas do we want to create?  What kind of legacy are we leaving for the future?  More importantly, don’t believe the public has all of the information about nuclear weapons or nuclear energy.

Let’s end our own self-destruction.  If I have offended anyone, I apologize.  It was not intended to be offensive.  These events in our history are a wake-up call.  It is time to stop hitting the snooze button.
